Does Your Dog Misbehave? Try These Training Tips!

Dog training can sometimes be difficult. Dogs are naturally playful and will often want to play when dog owners attempt to train them. It also takes them a while to register commands from their owner. The tips in this article will help you to successfully train your dog.

You will want to use your pet's name to get his or her attention. Use your dog's name when calling to go for a walk, for meal times, and for play. This will teach your dog to pay attention when you say their name. Never punish a dog for coming to you when you call them.

Just because your dog is obeying you, do not assume that they are done learning. Your dog is always learning. Never stop reinforcing good behavior. This is especially important if you move. A new surrounding can be very distracting for a dog. You might have to reteach them a great deal.

Dogs learn through reinforcement. When your dog does something you approve of and you would like to train them to do that on command, reward them with your voice. Consider, for example, the dog that unpredictably brings his owner his slippers. The owner should excitedly say the word "slippers" or whatever word they chose as a command for that behavior.

Training your dog to walk on lead takes time. The idea is to have your dog walk obediently beside you without straining, tugging, and pulling from side to side. Correct your dog's movement with short snaps of the lead that pull sharply and abruptly back against his momentum. He will stop pulling and walk complacently for a time beside you. During this time loosen the lead but when he pulls again snap the lead again.

When teaching a puppy basic commands, start with 'sit'. This is the easiest one for a dog to master. Hold his favorite snack just above his nose, and firmly say 'sit'. Most dogs will instinctively sit down at this point. Offer him the treat and don't forget to praise him profusely. If he doesn't sit, gently push his rear end towards the floor. After he has been sitting for a few seconds, give him the treat, and like before, remember to praise him.

Negative methods of training your dog don't work. Just as with humans, positive reinforcement of behaviors is much more effective. Use praise, treats and play time to show your dog that you are pleased with their performance. If he cannot do what you are asking him, do not punish him or yell at him. He will associate trying to do the task with negativity and will avoid the task even harder the next time.

Dogs have the uncanny ability to have single-minded focus when something catches their attention. Dogs learn by repetition so with continued training, your dog will immediately focus on what you are saying.

As stated before, dog training can be difficult sometimes. Dogs love to play, and will do so when training. Dogs must learn proper commands before they obey them. Using the dog training tips from the article above, you can train your dog to follow your commands and become obedient.
